Getting A Nudge To Update Or Upgrade macOS

Having an up-to-date Operating System (OS) is one of many measures taken in securing a computer against malicious apps and attackers. We at OIT are utilizing an application called Nudge to let folks know that it's time to run an update or upgrade. This helps keep University issued Macs secure and compliant to CSU standards.

What does Nudge look like?

Nudge will pop up when your University issued Mac needs an OS update or upgrade. It will look like any other Mac window but will have important information regarding the update or upgrade process, so please read the information presented in the pop up. The messaging will vary according to the situations listed below:

Normal Update/Upgrade

Normal Update Window

This window will pop up when your University issued Mac requires an OS update or a vetted upgrade. The pop up will contain information on the Mac's current OS and how may days remain to update/upgrade. A deferral option has been provided to allow users to postpone upgrades for a later time when the system can download and install the OS and when the Mac can be restarted without interfering with work. The macOS System Settings - Software Update window will open when selecting the "Update Device" button.

Postponed macOS Upgrade

Postponed Upgrade Window

This window will pop up when your University issued Mac requires an update but Apple has pushed out an OS upgrade that has not been tested by OIT to work with apps that the University community commonly uses. When you click the "Update Device" button, it will bring up the same System Settings - Software Update window as the example listed above, but be aware that the latest untested OS will be offered at the top of the window. Please look below the upgrade section to the "Also available" section and click on the "More Info..." link to view other update options.

From here, check all available check boxes and click on "Update Now".

Upgrade To A Specific macOS Version

Specific OS Upgrade Window

This window will pop up when your University issued Mac is behind on more than one OS upgrade or the device needs to be upgraded to a specific OIT approved OS. This process will be handled by the Self Service app on your University issued Mac when you click on the "Self Service" button in the pop up window.

Self Service Portal OS Upgrade

When Self Service pops up, click on the OS icon and then on "Upgrade" button to start the upgrade process. Do not close Self Service, this will cause the process to fail.

OS Upgrade Progress Window

A new window will pop up and will show progress relating to the downloading and installation of the OS and will show a countdown of when the Mac will restart to apply the upgrade. The window will also prompt you to plug into power before the upgrade process begins if not connected to a powered dock or its power cable. You can click "OK" to hide the current window so you can continue to work.

Replace Device

Replace Device Window

This window will pop up when your University issued Mac will no longer be able to receive OS updates or upgrades from Apple. At this point, the device no longer compliant with CSU security standards. When you see this window, please start the process to replace the Mac by contacting your department/program/dean/division before the "Required Date" indicated in the window.
