DoubleBots Do's and Dont's - Reserving from Learning Services

DoubleBot Reservation:

There are currently three Doublebots available: "Robby", "Hal 2 Jr." and "Maria".  Both the Turlock and Stockton campuses can accommodate requests for the robots but it is "first-come / first-served" and based on where they are most needed.

The first step is to submit a OIT TDX ticket for a DoubleBot reservation, with the times, dates and location of where the DoubleBot will be used.

A strong WI-FI signal is needed to operate the DoubleBot, so be aware that external locations and driving around campus is prohibited.  The DoubleBot can only be used indoors on campus with a strong WI-FI signal.

We will contact you when we have a ticket to confirm details and give you the login credentials to drive the DoubleBot on the day of your reservation. Training is available in advance.

Logging Into the Double Bot

Go to the website https://drive.doublerobotics.com/ and log in with the credentials that were emailed to you.

On the website, find your DoubleBot on the map and select the Robot Name you have reserved (make sure not to take another DoubleBot).

You can now drive the DoubleBot with the arrow keys and by clicking the mouse on the website window for where you want it to drive.

When finished click the disconnect button (looks like a phone hang up), and let OIT know where and when the DoubleBot can be picked back up.

In Person Use and Helpful Tips:

You can also help someone who is dialing into a DoubleBot in your location with the follow guidelines:

Make sure the DoubleBot is logged in with the "stanbot" username.  If not, log off the current user and then login as Stanbot.

When handling the DoubleBot In Person:

1. When transporting the DoubleBot, be sure the kickstands are already deployed and the pole is at its lowest height setting (On Screen P Button).
2. Try not to carry the DoubleBot from the inner pole that extends upward.
3. When manually inserting the DoubleBot into the Charging Dock by hand (in either orientation) it is also important to lower the pole all the way down and to have the kickstands deployed BEFORE inserting into the Charging Dock.
4. If you need to attach or remove the head unit from the DoubleBot, be sure the DoubleBot base is turned OFF first.
5. Avoid retracting/deploying the kickstands of the DoubleBot on uneven or soft floor surfaces, especially if the pole is extended.

* PARKING NOTES * Someone who is dialed in cannot park themselves on most surfaces.  It seems that the act of parking moves the DoubleBot, which causes it to undo the parking command.  The solution for them (and us) is to have someone hold the DoubleBot still while parking is enabled.  This is why parking in the charger (which you should ALWAYS do) works.  So if a dialed in person wants to park in a location, someone needs to be there to hold the DoubleBot still.  If someone outside the DoubleBot is parking it by pushing the face button, they need to hold the DoubleBot still while pushing the P button.  This seems to be the best way to get the PBrake enabled.

LS TIPS (these are for the newer versions only)

  •            Problem: DoubleBot battery seems low or isn't charging
  • Solution: help the DoubleBot to fully seat in its charger.  hit the "P" button to park

  • Problem: I can't login at all, I used this last year?!

  • Solution: The password probably changed, for security purposes its our intent to rotate the password between semesters.

  • Problem: There is a terrible ringing when I am with the DoubleBot.

  • Solution: The driver and the DoubleBot cannot be in the same room, it will cause feedback.  Please keep separated from the DoubleBot while you are operating it.
